The Right to information is identified in the Access to Information Practice Note as a strategically important support area for UNDP. As at 2003, only 30 of the countries in which UNDP is present had laws requiring the disclosure of government records.
The purpose of the guide is to provide UNDP country offices with guidance they can draw on and use in discussions with government counterparts and other stakeholders to promote the development of effective policies and legislation for right to information, especially as they relate to poor people.
